The Barnwood Arboretum is a perfect environment to film a horror, it is an isolated location that is perfect for victims to be in a vulnerable position- the church is also associated with the topic of religion which is a factor and attribute to our horror. There are also many trees that are surrounding the church which make it very easy to get some very appealing high angled shots; also the fields surrounding the area are very spacious which allow us to manoeuvre around easily and bring a substantial amount of people along to film.
The church itself has a very appealing look to it when light is shined on it at night, even during the day time it looks rather creepy but has a sense of comfort at the same time, this could be used to contrast as it seems like a harmless place during the day but at night things begin to become heated. The nickname of the church is 'The Church of Pain' which is what appealed to us quite a bit, it was quite intriguing to think of a church being place of pain, pain at a church usually means death as funeral ceremonies are performed in church.
The trees and the darkness combined create an amazing effect on viewers as you can tease the audience with illusions, this can make the action much more interesting and the intensity is raised through the roof. Also with bad weather it can be seen as quite a rough terrain which again can be used to our advantage as it will be your stereotypical scene of somebody struggling to escape.
Finally, there are many paths surrounding the church which can be used for extremely nice high angles from the trees which can be creating a buildup to something. Paths usually restrict people and set the victim on their pathway to either life or death, they are unavoidable therefore they are very easy to interpret any kind of ideas for a horror film.
The Cellar
The Cellar we have decided to use will be a perfect environment to film a horror film in, this is because it is very compact and claustrophobic- sellers are also usually stereotypically seen in many horrors as being a location where things become very tense in a very short period of time. The Cellar also allows us to play around and modify the lighting, the use of props and objects inside of the seller means we can create shadows and illusions to derange the audience into thinking the worst all the time- keeping them on their toes throughout the OTS. This is a very good technique to keep the audience gripped and interested.
Another positive we gain from filming in a compact space is that the camera can also be placed in small compact areas giving the audience that feeling of being in a claustrophobic space, this also intensifies the tension and creates a build up and a recipe for disaster.
The Cellar is to play the part of being the cellar under the church, as it is going to be portrayed as something a lot spookier as churches can be seen to be quite creepy to most people.
